Wonder

Google Cultural Institute Launch

The Barbican Centre  |  London  |  November 2015

Google commissioned WONDER to help them launch the performing arts section of the Cultural Institute, their expansive online project designed to explore treasures from the global arts scene. This event was delivered in association with The Cultural Institute’s partner organisation, the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).

We were asked to create a space to showcase some of the amazing and unique content from the world of music, opera, theatre, dance and performance art.

At the centre of the showcase was an exclusive first look at the RSC’s groundbreaking 360° footage of Alex Hassel, performing a scene from Henry V. Guests were shown how technology could allow them to step on stage and control which camera to view the scene from or manipulate the angles to get the best view in the house.

The main challenge was applying modern technology to traditional forms of entertainment, capturing their physical drama through a digital eye.

Our design emphasised the visual on-screen impact of the Cultural Institute with beautiful, digitally-delivered content. We made the entire surface behind the presenter, an LED wall, showing each element large scale, in brilliant colour and clarity. We also challenged the original brief by commissioning a specialist graphic designer to create a bespoke animation, offering a striking visual focal point for guests and used tablets to augment the visitor experience, immersing them in the moment.
